India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) in collaboration with the Archaeology Museum, Deccan College, Deemed University, Pune invites applications for a museum fellowship for a period of one year.
The Archival and Museum Fellowships initiative of IFA began with the two-fold objective of providing practitioners with an opportunity to generate new, critical and creative approaches to public engagement with collections in archives and museums, and to energise these spaces as platforms for dialogue and discourse.
About the Museum:
The Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Pune is the third oldest educational institute in India. It began as the Hindoo College, founded in 1821 by Bombay Presidency for the propagation of Sanskrit. It was later renamed the Poona College and in 1864 came to be known as the Deccan College. It was in 1939 that Archaeology was added as a discipline with Dr H D Sankalia as Professor of Archaeology. The Institute started functioning as a Deemed University from 1994.
The Archaeology Museum first began as a 'research museum' for students at Deccan College, Pune, housing objects sourced from excavations and explorations carried out in different parts of India by faculty and students of the department. These objects included stone tools, animal fossils, pottery, stone, terracotta, copper and iron objects, and human skeleton remains.
The Archaeology Museum opened its doors to the public in 1940. Currently, the museum is located on campus and its large collection of antiquities housed in eight galleries, which are the Professor H D Sankalia Memorial Gallery, Prehistory Gallery, Protohistory Gallery, Megalithic Gallery, Early Historic Gallery, Art and Architecture Gallery, Epigraphy and Numismatics Gallery and Ethno-archaeology Gallery.

About the Fellowship:
This fellowship offers creative practitioners to work on two important aspects of curation—the presentation of objects and the presentation of knowledge. The fellowship gives curators, archaeologists, exhibition designers, art historians and others, the opportunity to curate and present an exhibition from the materials available in the museum's collection. Besides the exhibition, other expected outcomes should include curated public events such as talks and workshops around the collection, during the fellowship period of one year.
Applicant profile:
We seek applications from curators, archaeologists, exhibition designers, art historians and other creative practitioners with prior curatorial experience and a strong interest in research and working with museum collections.
Practitioners who are Indian nationals or have been residents of India for five or more years are eligible to apply. To know more about our eligibility criteria please click here.
Financial assistance and other support:
The fellowship provides an honorarium of Rs 2,00,000/- for the duration of one year. A separate budget will be provided for the final outcome (exhibition and outreach activities).
Important dates:
The deadline for receiving applications is January 22, 2018.
Shortlisted candidates will be informed by the end of January 2018.
Interviews with shortlisted candidates are expected to take place by by mid-February 2018.
The Fellowship will commence from March 01, 2018 for a period of one year.
Application Process:
Your application must include:
- A brief description of an exhibition you can develop from the collection at the Archaeology Museum. The description should include your vision, approach and possible outcomes of the programmes. The intention is to give us an idea of how you would like to approach this project.
- A brief note on the public programmes you could potentially develop from the collection at the Archaeology Museum.
- A letter of interest explaining how you would benefit from this Museum Fellowship. Please identify aspects of your practice that you think will be honed and further developed during the course of the Fellowship.
- A brief description of a project you have been involved with either as a curator, exhibition designer or researcher. The description should include the vision, the approach, the processes and the outcomes that have resulted from the project. Please include documentation of the project, which could include six to eight scanned or printed images with titles and date, DVD (maximum four minutes), catalogues, artworks, performances, or reviews.
- Your curriculum vitae.
