For a series of arts-based exploratory learning modules at the Government Higher Primary School, Belandoor, Dakshina Kannada district. The project will enable seventh-grade students to explore the ecosystem of a local river, Kumaradhara. Drawing on content from their geography, mathematics, language and science syllabi, students will attempt to learn about the journey of the river, the flora and fauna around it, and its centrality in the environment of the region. They will be encouraged to respond through their creative expressions. The outcome of this project will be an exhibition and a publication. The Grantee’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will be a copy of the publication, photographs and video documentation of the project. Grant funds will pay for honorarium, workshop and materials, travel, exhibition and printing, documentation, professional fees and an accountant’s fee.

For a series of arts-based exploratory learning modules at the Government Higher Primary School, Haandi, Chikkamagalur district. The project will involve fifth to seventh-grade students to study, analyse and sing the Shatpadis — six-line poetic stanzas— from the Jaimini Bharata composed by Lakshmisha, the 16th century Kannada poet from the region. The outcome of the project will be a performance.  The Grantee’s deliverables to IFA along with the final report will be photographs and video documentation of the project. Grant funds will pay for honorarium, professional fees, travel, performance, documentation, workshop and an accountant’s fee.

For a series of arts-based exploratory learning modules at the Government Model Higher Primary School, Kalladka, Dakshina Kannada district. The project will involve 30 students in various engagements to understand, analyse, and critique different aspects of the performing arts and enable them to write about it. The outcome will be a bi-monthly arts newsletter created by the students. The Grantee’s deliverables to IFA along with the final report will be copies of the publication, photographs and video documentation of the project. Grant funds will pay for honorarium, printing, workshop, professional fees, travel, postal charges, documentation and an accountant’s fee.

For a series of arts-based exploratory learning modules at the Government Model Primary School, Hongasandra, Bangalore. The project will enable fifth-grade students to explore the world of matchboxes: their design and the reasons behind it, their typography, and their geographical journeys. The outcome will be a matchbox museum set up in the school. Grantee’s deliverables to IFA along with the final report will be photographs and video documentation of the project. Grant funds will pay for honorarium, workshop and material, professional fees, documentation and printing, travel, exhibition and an accountant’s fee.

For a series of arts-based exploratory learning modules at the High School section of the SSEA Government Pre-University College, Gauribidanur, Chikkaballapura district. The project will involve ninth-grade students in various visual arts and theatrical activities centred on the struggles for independence, and later, for land, that were witnessed in Vidurashwatha and Nagasandra villages in 1938 and 1984 respectively. The outcome of the project will be a performance and a publication.The Grantee’s deliverables to IFA along with the final report will be a copy of the publication, photographs and video documentation of the project. Grant funds will pay for honorarium, workshop, performance, professional fees, travel, documentation, printing and publicity, and an accountant’s fee.

The project will involve eighth-grade students in visual-arts-integrated activities involving subjects such as math and science. The activities will be centred on the ecology of a tree, exploring its nature and structure, the animals and insects that inhabit it, as well as its importance in the environment. The outcome of this project will be an exhibition and a publication titled Maravembudu Ondu Jaivika Vyavasthe (‘Tree is an Organic Ecosystem’)The Grantee’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will be a copy of the publication, photographs and video documentation of the project. Grant funds will pay for honorarium, workshop and material, documentation and printing, exhibition, professional fees, travel, and an accountant’s fee.

The Malenadu Educational and Rural Development Society


Grant Period: One year

For an engagement with students and staff of Chandana English Medium School, run by The Malenadu Educational and Rural Development Society, in Narebailu, Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka to explore learning possibilities by integrating community knowledge and their art practices into classroom pedagogies. Under the guidance of Sukri Bommanagowda, an elder of the Halakki Vokkaliga community who is one of the custodians of their tradition, students will be encouraged to connect with and learn from the community through a series of activities such as documenting, discussions, field trips, and interviews. The outcome will be a series of exhibitions and performances, and a publication of creative writing by the students. The Grantee’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will include a copy of the publication and still and video documentation of the project. Grant funds will pay for travel and living costs, honorarium, workshop costs, printing costs, documentation costs and orientation costs.

For a series of art-based experiential learning modules at the Kuvempu Centenary Government Higher Primary School, in Cheemangala village in Chikkaballapura district. With many in this region having histories of migration, students will document and analyse their own families’ journeys through interviews with community elders. They will also be encouraged to make geographical maps of these journeys to understand their impact on local history.  The outcome will be a workbook comprising these stories and maps. The Grantee’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will be a copy of the workbook and photographs and the video documentation of the entire project. Grant funds will pay for printing costs, documentation costs, professional fees, honorarium, stationery and photocopying costs and an accountant’s fee.

For an engagement with eighth grade students of the High School section of the Government Pre-University College in Hanumasagara village in Koppala district, to explore and document the traditional systems of water management of the region, as well as similar practices in the larger world outside. Students will also attempt to learn the stories of Gullava, the goddess of rainwater, and the associated rainwater harvesting practices that are predominant across these regions of Hyderabad-Karnataka. The outcome will be a series of performances and a publication. The Grantee’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will be a copy of the publication, and photographs and the video documentation of the entire project. Grant funds will pay for printing costs, honorarium, stationery costs, travel costs, documentation costs, professional fees and an accountant’s fee.

For an engagement with the first to fifth grade students of the Government Lower Primary School, as well as the other children in Sannakere village in Chikkamagaluru district, to better equip themselves to read and write in Kannada. Through explorations of ideas generated from the community, the children will learn stories related to their environment in different languages, community food practices and recipes, and personal stories from people’s past experiences, cultures and backgrounds. The outcome will be a publication of the children’s writing. The Grantee’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will be a copy of the publication, and photographs and video documentation of the entire project. For an engagement with eighth grade students of the Government Higher Primary School in Kalaburagi to study the paintings, architecture and administration of the Bahmani Sultanate in connection with their social science syllabus. Students will be involved in workshops on line drawing, Urdu calligraphy, and creative writing on the history of the Bahmani Sultanate. The outcome will be a compilation of artworks by students in the form of a book. The Grantee’s deliverables to IFA with the final reports will be still and video documentation of the entire project and an art book. The project will enable students to trace and document the migration of a wide variety of birds in the Uttara Kannada region. Students will also engage in birdwatching and relate it to their environmental studies curriculum. The outcome will be a publication of short stories, poems and folk songs. The Grantee’s deliverables to IFA with the final reports will be still and video documentation of the entire project. For an engagement with eighth grade students of the Government High School near Hommaragalli in Mysuru district to explore the various vegetables and fruits of South America that have become part of Indian cuisine. The exploration will draw from Namma Hotteyalli Dakshina America, a book written by BGL Swami. Students will be involved in preparing a theatrical script based on short stories from this book, in relation to their science curriculum. The outcome will be a series of performances. The Grantee’s deliverables to IFA with the final reports will be still and video documentation of the entire project. For a series of arts-based experiential learning modules at the Government Higher Primary School, in Papemajalu village in Dakshina Kannada district. In this project, mathematics will be taught by using theatre techniques and the popular regional form of Yakshagana-Talamaddale. Theatre scripts and riddles will be built around concepts and themes in mathematics. The outcome will be a stage performance in the presence of teachers and community members. The Grantee's deliverables to IFA with the Final Report will include photographs and video documentation of the project. Grant funds will pay for costs towards professional fees, material, performance, resource persons’ fees, refreshment, documentation, travel, printing, and an accountant’s fee.

For a series of arts-based experiential learning modules at the Government Higher Primary School in Aaladahalli village in Shivamogga district. The project will involve students across classes in various visual and theatrical activities centred on the lakes in and around the region. The students will also map these lakes. The outcome will be a series of performances and a group discussion titled Beladingalalli Kereyangaladi (Activities around the lake on a full moon night).  The Grantee's deliverables to IFA with the Final Report will include photographs and video documentation of the project. Grant funds will pay for costs towards an honorarium, professional fees, documentation, exhibition and performance, material, preparation, and an accountant’s fee.
