Project 560, 2015: Artistic interventions by two grantees | November 07 | Suchitra Cinema and Cultural Academy | Bangalore

IFA is excited to bring to you the first artistic interventions of Project 560, 2015!

Project 560, 2015, is an effort to explore the stories of various spaces in Bangalore, their histories and meanings, through the contemplation, engagement and imagination of artists and residents. This is an IFA initiative partnered by Citi India.

A select panel of experts including Vivek Shanbag, Maya Krishna Rao, and Deepa Ganesh awarded six grants, of which two were made to N Mangala and S Ramnatha.

Mangala received a grant for a multi-sensory artistic experience at one of Bangalore's old restaurants, the Vidyarthi Bhavan, which will reflect on the history of the restaurant, to make new meanings of the space in contemporary Bangalore. Her first intervention will be readings and a discussion — Aavarana Abhijnana.

Spaces have multiple meanings – we live, dream, aspire, experience and more, in any single space, found or created. Mangala will present readings and a discussion on these varied connotations of 'space'. These explorations set the stage for Mangala's performance at Vidyarthi Bhavan, which will examine the many layers of meanings that can be discovered in a single space over time.

Ramnatha received a grant for a theatrical performance at B V Karanth's former house in Girinagar, inspired by the life and works of the theatre legend. His first intervention is a performative reading — Rangajangamana Nata.

What makes an actor? For Karanth a sense of rhythm, voice modulation, physical fitness and eloquence in language as well as emotion, are essential qualities to be honed by an aspiring actor. The performative piece by Ramnatha is a demonstration of the processes developed by B V Karanth for an actor. Ramnatha, through his experiences as a student of Karanth and his own practice in theatre, will provide a unique perspective on this dynamic person — Karanth.
