Project Period: One year and three months

For the implementation of a Foundation Project by IFA under Arts Projects (Research/Practice) that will research into the lives of artist-led institutions that existed in Bangalore between 1990 and 2022. Through an in-depth study of about 10 to 12 such initiatives, the project will inquire into the early history, programming, economic model, community engagement, politics and artistic visions of each space. This is an attempt to discursively engage with an alternative art history that defied the norms of dominant art markets and remained on the fringes. The outcomes from this project will be 10 to 12 commissioned essays and art works, a process essay and a website that will be a repository of all textual and audio-visual materials. The Project Coordinator's deliverables to IFA with the final report will be a downloaded version of the website, audio recordings of all interviews, the 10 to 12 commissioned essays and art works, the process essay and copies of all public announcement posters. Project funds will pay for contract fees and materials.

Salila Prasad Vanka


Project Period: One year

For the implementation of a Foundation Project implemented by IFA under Arts Projects (Research/Practice), which will investigate the narratives of visual culture and spatial politics in Bangalore through a study of the evolution of public statues and sculptures since the early 1990s. The outcomes of the project will include an archival photo collection of public statuary, six to eight in-depth case studies of public statues, and a public exhibition highlighting the project findings. The Project Coordinator’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will be the archival photo collection of public statuary with annotations, maps, a detailed illustrated project report of six to eight in-depth case studies, and detailed documentation of the public exhibition, including publicity creatives, photographs and audio-visual documentation. Project funds will pay for contract fees, exhibition, local conveyance and stationery.

Project Period: One year

For the implementation of a Foundation Project implemented by IFA under Arts Projects (Research/Practice), which will create a theatrical production on Bangalore’s imminent water crisis. The play will focus  on the paradoxes of Bangalore’s development such as the inequalities created by water scarcity, the changing imagery and management of water as it moves through the city, and a future-focussed approach towards sustainability. The outcomes of the project will be a playscript and the production. The Project Coordinator’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will be the playscript, and photographs and audio-visual documentation of the production. Project funds will pay for contract fees, production, consumables and travel and living.

Anmol Tikoo


Project Period: One year and three months

For the implementation of a Foundation Project by IFA under Arts Projects (Research/Practice) that will explore and engage with Bangalore as a centre for mental health and well-being. By documenting conversations, stories and personal histories of caregivers, mental health experts and users of the city’s mental health system, the project attempts to investigate a little-known aspect of the city’s history and offer a new methodology for engaging with a subject as complex as mental health. The outcomes of this project will comprise two sets of audio series, a group discussion, a public panel discussion and site-specific dispersion of artistically curated audio series via QR codes. The Project Coordinator’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will be audio recordings of all the interviews, still and video recordings of the panel discussion and still documentation of the site-specific QR codes. Project funds will pay for professional fees, honorarium, resource persons’ fees, travel, equipment hire, venue hire, food and printing and materials.  

Mohammed Affan Pasha


Project Period: One year and three months

For the implementation of a Foundation Project by IFA under Arts Projects (Research/Practice), that explores and engages with Dakhni expressions in Bangalore’s popular culture through rap and hiphop music. Titled Apnich Bol, Dakhnich Bol, the project seeks to celebrate and foreground Bangalore’s deep-rooted Dakhni culture which has been overshadowed by the city’s mainstream discourse. The outcomes of the project will include a nine-track music album, three music videos, six to ten curated performances and a bonus track, with the possibility of a behind-the-scenes film. The Project Coordinator’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will be the complete album along with the bonus track, the music videos and photographs from the local performances. Project funds will pay for professional fees, equipment hire, honorarium, travel and food, studio hire, performances and material costs.

This Project was Terminated by IFA and the Project Coordinator is ineligible to apply to IFA in the future.

Maya Janine D’Costa


Project Period: Three months

For the implementation of a Foundation Project by IFA under Neighbourhood Engagements, which will create a series of drawings that investigates the role of the marketplace in the city through interactions in the meat market in Murphy Town, Ulsoor. The project will examine the nature and possibilities of interactions among sellers, butchers and customers, and reflect on broader issues such as society’s relationship with meat and the future of the marketplace. The outcome of this project will be a series of drawings created in conversation with the community that evoke the meat market, and a public sharing in the marketplace. The Project Coordinator’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will be process documentation of the research and interactions, images of drawings and documentation of the physical installation.  Project funds will pay for honorarium, material costs and travel.

Ishan Hendre


Project Period: Three months

For the implementation of a Foundation Project by IFA under Neighbourhood Engagements, which will create a series of video vignettes capturing stories of the gold and silver crafting community in Cubbonpete and Anchepete.  The project will document the diversity of the industry, its community and the changing dynamics of the pete. The outcome of this project will be the video vignettes, which will be shared with the community through a series of art interventions. The Project Coordinator’s deliverables to IFA along with the final report will be process documentation of research and interactions, photographs and video vignettes, and documentation of the final sharing. Project funds will pay for exhibition cost, equipment rental, honorarium, printing and stationery, travel.

Mehar Zariwala


Project Period: Three months

For the implementation of a Foundation Project by IFA under Neighbourhood Engagements, which will create a series of zines that documents the history and lived experiences of residents of Rustum Bagh. Through detailed research and conversations with residents, as well as members of the Kothavala family, the project will culminate in a zine-making workshop with young residents to bring alive the stories of the neighbourhood. The outcome of this project will be an exhibition of the zine series in the neighbourhood. The Project Coordinator’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will be process documentation of research and interactions, images from the zines and documentation of the exhibition. Project funds will pay for workshop costs, equipment hire, printing and publication, and exhibition. 

Sharath Nayak


Grant Period: One year

For creating a series of participatory art events around a few industrial campuses in the city, to trace the unacknowledged story of life in the surrounding villages of these institutions that were a part of the formation of Bangalore as a metropolis. The outcomes of this project will be a digital archive of the collected stories, curated walks, and performances led by the members of the community and a travelling exhibition to showcase cartographic representations reflecting personal experiences of the community members. The grantee’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will be a detailed textual and illustrated document of the curatorial process and outcomes, photo and video documentation of curated walks and performances, soft copy of the digital archive, soft copies of exhibition panels, and cartographic visualisation, short films and photo essays. Grant funds will pay for professional fees, honorarium, exhibition costs, equipment hire, venue hire, local conveyance and hospitality, digital archives costs, and an accountant’s fee.

This Grant was amicably cancelled based on reasons mutually agreed upon by the Grantee and IFA due to unavoidable circumstances.

Shaona Sen


Grant Period: One year and six months

For a community-based art practitioner who is a football coach and co-founder of Shining Stars Football Club, to create a series of participatory art events based on skills and tactics of football as a form of art and creative expression, with the children from two marginalised communities in Bangalore. The outcomes of the project will be zines, magazine, murals, community playbook kit, roadside games, exhibitions, performances and a festival. The grantee’s deliverables to IFA with the final report will be a detailed textual and illustrated document of the curatorial process and outcomes, photo and video documentation of the events, publicity materials, the community playbook kit, and copies of the zines and magazine. Grant funds will pay for professional fees, honorarium, material costs, local conveyance, equipment hire, publicity, space hire and an accountant’s fee.
