For a compilation and ethnographical study of the distinctive folk songs of industrial workers on the plantations, mines and factories of eastern India. Anticipated outcomes of the study include a published anthology and audio recordings of the songs for archival use.

Centre for Studies in Social Sciences

For tracing, documenting and classifying the literary and visual history of Bengali print advertisements between 1800 and 1950. The compilation will be published and the collected material housed at the Hitesranjan Sanyal Memorial Collection, Calcutta.

Society for the Preservation of Satyajit Ray Films


Grant Period: Over one year

For sorting, classifying and cataloguing the personal papers of Satyajit Ray. Digital copies of this monumental archive of textual, graphic and audio material will be made available through a website as an interactive multi-media product. The project is also expected to generate an exhibition titled ‘The World of Satyajit Ray’.

For workshops in villages and small towns by urban visual artists/potters and tribal and folk potters to facilitate an exchange of skills and techniques in pottery and ceramics.

Jana Sanghati Kendra


Grant Period: Over one year

For a fresh examination of the dynamics between theatre and social action, by a coordinating body for welfare organisations in rural West Bengal, two social organisations, and three theatre workers. Through fieldwork and a series of workshops, the collaborators will explore how spontaneous performance can be refined to invigorate activist theatre.

For research towards an annotation of hitherto undisclosed material on Indian cinema, including government records, parliamentary debates, interviews, memoranda submitted by trade bodies, and reports of film inquiry committees. The project will highlight the hidden discourses that influence the making of Indian cinema.

The Seagull Foundation for the Arts


Grant Period: Over three years

For the production and promotion of a national theatre quarterly, and research towards theatre reference works. Seagull plans to evaluate the journal in terms of its content, reach and scope, strengthen its subscription base, and bring out an annual issue in Bengali besides expediting publication of theatre books.

Grant Period: Over one year and six months

For the study and documentation of the threatened musical traditions of the Adivasi communities of Junglemahal in West Bengal. The project is expected to reacquaint younger members of the community with their own music and create income generating avenues for instrument makers, besides contributing to government literacy programmes in the region.

Vasudha Joshi


Grant Period: Over one year and six months

For the study and documentation of Ganjifa, an indigenous card game, and the artists who paint the cards in various parts of the country. The research is expected to result in publications intended to introduce children to the game and its culture, booklets to help NGOs popularise and market Ganjifa card games, and material for use in multimedia.
