Arts Education
2018-2019

Grant Period: One year and six months

Kavya C is a Bharatanatyam dancer from Bengaluru. She has been practicing Bharatanatyam for the past 15 years and has performed in over 200 programmes across the country. While she is also an industrial design engineer, Kavya is a trained Carnatic singer and theatre artist. She has worked as a creative movement specialist at Fitkids Private Limited and at present, she runs her own dance school Inchara Kalanikethana.

In this project, Kavya is planning to explore creative movements with fourth and fifth grade students of the Government Lower Primary School in Muddapura, Karenahalli village, near Bidadi, Bengaluru Rural. Creative movement is a joyful way for children to explore music, develop physical skills, channelise energy, stimulate imagination and inculcate creativity. Creative movements use body actions to communicate an image, an idea and an emotion.  Kavya wants to connect these movements to language and science topics from the school curriculum to expose students to learn in an exciting and joyful manner. She also attempts to break up various themes and concepts in the science curriculum through movements for better cognition of the students. Kavya believes that through creative movement, imaginative thinking, self-expression and motor skills are elevated. Kavya will also invite other resource persons to run a series of workshops for teachers, students and community members.

The outcome of this grant will be performance of movement sequences and role play composed by students in the presence of teachers and community members. The deliverables of the grant would include photographs and video documentation.

This grant is made possible with support from Citi India.
