THE IFA ARCHIVE
IFA is a national, not-for-profit, grantmaking organisation that supports practice, research and education in the arts and culture, in India. Set up as a Public Charitable Trust in 1993, IFA started making grants in 1995, and has continued its work over 24 years. IFA has supported almost 600 arts projects disbursing over Rs 25 crore, across the country.

We are creating an archive of the diverse work of our grantees, and other material that emerged from our grants and its associated processes, covering over 24 years of IFA. This material, a vast collection of documents, photographs, newspaper reports, audio, and video recordings, need to be organised, categorised and arranged for further processing, or long term storage. Once processed, both data and the files will become publicly accessible online and offline.

The Associate Archivist will work closely with the Archivist and Assistant Archivist towards this goal.

Responsibilities:
You will be primarily responsible for pre-digitisation processes, physical conservation and operations of the physical archive

  • You will retrieve, verify, organise and catalogue the material for the archive
  • Create metadata for the physical documents
  • Prepare physical/ analogue material for digitisation and digitise if required
  • Prepare the physical material for long term storage, following archival policies
  • Communicate with present and past grantees for material retrieval
  • Support the team in gathering and arranging material to upload in the online archive
  • Help people navigate the online and physical archive and respond to queries
  • Learn and participate in policy making
  • Any other work as required for the archive

Eligibility

  • Bachelor's degree in Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences is a must. A Master's degree and knowledge of speaking and reading more than one Indian language will be preferred
  • Degree/ Diploma in Library and Information Science/Archival Studies/ Museology, or related subjects will be desirable
  • Two-three years of experience of working with institutional archives will be ideal
  • An understanding of the arts in India will be appreciated

Additionally, we will be looking for the skills mentioned below:

  • Experience in using MS Excel, MS Access and/or any kind of database software
  • Experience of handling fragile documents/material for digitisation
  • Hands-on knowledge of archival digitisation of textual/audio/video material
  • Knowledge about different file formats for audio, video and documents and conversion tools
  • Methodicalness, attention to detail and organisational skills

Remuneration
For the post of Associate Archivist, remuneration will be Rs 35,000 per month subject to statutory deductions

LOCATION & TERM
This role is in-house, and full-time, based in Bangalore. You will work at IFA office as well as in the IFA physical archive facility which is very close to the main office

The appointments will be on an annual contractual basis, with possibilities of renewal
