As the lockdown and call for physical distancing continue, we, at IFA, are discovering new ways of engaging with technology and online platforms to share the work of our grantees. We are delighted to introduce a virtual series of conversations, film screenings, and performances titled Throwback Thursdays with IFA, where everyone is welcome.

On Thursday, October 08, 2020, we invite you for a presentation by Ramya Ramesh, moderated by Suman Gopinath, Senior Programme Officer, Archives and Museums Programme, IFA.

Ramya received a fellowship from IFA to work with the archive at the Raman Research Institute, Bangalore under the Archival and Museum Fellowship initiative, that was made possible with support from Tata Trusts.

The Raman Research Institute (RRI) is a premier institute for research in basic sciences in Bangalore. It was founded by the Nobel Laureate Sir CV Raman in 1948 for research in basic sciences that advance the knowledge of humankind. He served as its director until his demise in 1970. The archive at RRI holds more than 5000 photographs, hand-written letters, transcripts of lectures, and instruments used by CV Raman during his lifetime.

Ramya’s remit under the fellowship was to design the physical archival space located in the library of RRI and curate a permanent display of the archival material. The archival gallery now showcases the life and science of CV Raman from 1888 to 1970, and the scientific journey of the Raman Research Institute from 1970 onwards. It serves both as a gallery and visitors’ centre for the institute, with the primary purpose of inspiring young minds to pursue science.

Ramya is an architect and urban designer with a keen interest in participatory design processes. She received her Master’s degree from the Bartlett Development Planning Unit, University College of London and her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from CEPT University, Ahmedabad. She is a Visiting Faculty at CEPT University and co-founder of The Design Toolbox, an architectural design, education and research consultancy based out of Ahmedabad.
