How does one listen?
Are there multiple ways of listening?
How do images and text interact with the aural?

These are some of the questions that Bhowmik and Majumdar will address in their presentation on Arnold Bake (1899-1963). Bake was a Dutch ethnomusicologist who travelled in and around Bengal between 1925- 1956, making extensive recordings of folk music. Furthermore, Bake worked closely with Rabindranath Tagore to study, collect, preserve, and distribute his songs and poetry to a wider audience. Bake's work constitutes an important archive of sound and music.

Singer and writer Moushumi Bhowmik and sound recordist Sukanta Majumdar, who curated the exhibitionTime upon Time: Arnold Bake in Bengal that took place in Kala Bhavan, Visva Bharati Shantiniketan in March 2016 will re-install excerpts from that exhibition at 1 Shanthi Road.

This small exhibition will be accompanied by a presentation by Bhowmik and Majumdar who will bring to us sounds and images from their ongoing work on Arnold Bake, and the process of creating such an exhibition.

The Travelling Archive and Time upon Time: Arnold Bake in Bengal
The Travelling Archive (www.thetravellingarchive.org) first encountered Bake's recordings in the British Library archives, in 2003, and since then they have remained deeply connected to his work. The exhibition Time upon Time on Bake is the outcome of research from people's personal collections and several archives in India and abroad, including the British Library, ARCE-AIIS, SOAS, Leiden University and Rabindra Bhavan, Santiniketan. The exhibition is as much about Bake and the time in which he lived, the people who surrounded him, their sounds and silences, as it is about archives and the archival process.

Moushumi Bhowmik received a fellowship under the Archival and Museum Fellowship initiative of India Foundation for the Arts.
