TAKE on RESIDENCIES - a symposium
11th July, 9.45 am- 5.30 pm
Over the last decade, there has been a proliferation of residencies across the world – from major art institutions to community cultural centers to non-conventional (and even non-art) spaces – that host artists, archivists, writers, researchers, architects, curators, activists and scientists. Residencies, particularly in India, are still in an ongoing phase of pedagogical experimentation, and the emergent uncertainties of what works and what doesn’t calls for urgent collective reflection by the arts community. Several arguments have been popularly put forward in support of residencies--artistic development, peer learning, urban regeneration, community-based and collaborative practice, institution-building, and cultural exchange, to name a few--whose merits need more thoughtful investigation. The ‘TAKE on RESIDENCIES’ symposium is an opportunity for artists, curators, organisations hosting residencies, and funders to come together to deliberate the pedagogic possibilities and challenges of residencies. How can creative and critical endeavours be better served through new forms of residencies, and can we embark on a collective imagining of what these new forms might be? We hope the symposium will initiate a productive dialogue between the various stake-holders in the residency ecology.
The forthcoming issue of TAKE on Art, themed on residencies, will be launched during the symposium.
