India Foundation for the Arts (IFA)
invites you to
Matchbox—Lighting Many New Ideas
A presentation by Syed Fakruddin Huseni
(This session will be held in Kannada)

Friday, August 19, 2022 | 06:30 PM – 07:30 PM IST  | Zoom and Facebook Live

How can building a matchbox collection help one understand the history of industrial design? What are the aesthetic choices made when designing a matchbox cover? What do these designs have to say about the times and the regions they were produced in?

Join us for a presentation by Syed Fakruddin Huseni about his ongoing project that engages students of Government Model Higher Primary School, Hongasandra, Bangalore with the design and aesthetics of matchboxes across the country.

Since their invention, matches have been one of the most ubiquitous consumer products in the world, facilitating the widest range of graphic design and artistry. These designs have evolved from carrying the manufacturer’s name and location, to using varied and unrelated objects as brand symbols, often influenced by contemporary design styles. The project emphasises the importance of collecting everyday objects and attempts to encourage students to become collectors themselves. Syed will talk about the unfolding of the project and the project’s vision for building a matchbox museum in the school.

Syed Fakruddin Huseni is a Sanjhi artist and a matchbox collector from Bangalore.

Syed received a grant from IFA under the Arts Education programme in 2019-20, made possible with support from Citi India.

This session is organised as part of the Project Showcase @ IFA, a series of online presentations to showcase, discuss, and engage audiences with the diverse projects we support across programmes.
