Date with The Archive:
The Past and the Present

A Presentation by Sunil Shanbag
(This session will be conducted in English and Hindi)

Thursday, August 18, 2022 | 06:30 PM – 07:30 PM IST | Zoom and Facebook Live

What does one think of when envisioning an archive? What is an archive’s potential for artistic experimentation and how can we conceive of it beyond scholarly endeavours?

Join us for a discussion on archives and how an artist may attach meanings to them during the course of their explorations. The ‘archive’ is not just a repository of information, but also a space to think about the past, and find new meanings in the present. Memory as an archive plays a formidable role in shaping how the present is viewed. These thoughts have influenced two decades of Sunil Shanbag’s theatre work during which archives were located, and sometimes created, to enable the work. In his presentation, Sunil will try to illuminate this process with references to some specific theatre productions.

Sunil Shanbag is a Mumbai based theatre director and producer. He is the co-founder and artistic director of Theatre Arpana, and Tamaasha Theatre. He is also an award winning documentary film-maker, involved in several theatre and arts documentation projects.

Launched in 2018, The IFA Archive is a space that holds the diverse materials of the projects supported and implemented by IFA over the years, currently featuring materials from 372 projects online at https://www.theifaarchive.org/

Date with The Archive is a series of talks by artists across different practices who have used archives extensively for their creative work, to bring to focus the potential of the archive as a significant resource for artistic explorations.

The IFA Archive is built with support from Indorama Charitable Trust.
