Nayakis of Kannada Company Theatre: Sexuality and Respectability

A conversation between Sharanya Ramprakash and Preethi Nagaraj
(This session will be held in Kannada, with live translation in English)

Thursday, September 29, 2022 | 06:30 PM – 07:30 PM IST | Zoom and Facebook Live

How has the character of the frontline comic actresses originated and evolved in Kannada Company Theatre? What are the dynamics between the mainstage lead actresses and frontline comic actresses who shared a common stage but were portrayed as contrasting icons of womanhood? In what ways have these contrasts and collisions affected the landscape of Kannada Company Theatre and Kannada culture?

Join us for a conversation that looks closely at these questions, with Sharanya Ramprakash and Preethi Nagaraj, as they discuss Sharanya’s ongoing research and set out to unpack their encounters with vulgarity, women and Kannada Company Theatre. They will examine the ways in which actresses of Kannada Company Theatre define and defy notions of female respectability through their performance and selfhood.

Sharanya Ramprakash is a theatremaker whose work experiments with language, tradition and gender. She writes, acts, directs and collaborates with various forms, communities and theatremakers locally, nationally and internationally.

Preethi Nagaraj is a Mysore based political analyst, theatre person, journalist, writer and translator. She is a bilingual writer (Kannada and English) who has worked in newspapers and television channels including CNBC, Deccan Herald, Prajavani and The New Indian Express.

Sharanya Ramprakash received a grant from India Foundation for the Arts, under the Arts Research programme. It is made possible with support from Tata Trusts, with the corpus interest of an earlier seed grant.

This session is organised as part of the Project Showcase @ IFA, a series of online presentations to showcase, discuss, and engage audiences with the diverse projects we support across programmes.
