R Paramashivan!

Paramashivan sifts through his memories of a career spanning eighty years in theatre and music, to provide a glimpse into Bangalore's artistic environment since 1935, up until the 1970s. Interwoven with songs and stories, this presentation will look at the theatre companies and the artists that grew, and gradually faded away, in a dynamic city that is constantly transforming.

R Paramashivan is a legendary theatre personality. As a versatile actor, singer, instrumentalist and music composer, he has served Kannada theatre, music and films for the last eight decades.

Paramashivan's tryst with theatre began in 1935, when he began as a child actor, and later a singer in the company theatres of the erstwhile Mysore state. He has worked with the Chamundeswari Company, K. Hirannayya Mitra Mandali, Sheshachar's Shesha Kamala Kala Mandali, Subbiah Naidu's Sahitya Samrajya Nataka Mandali, later Gubbi Veeranna's Gubbi Company, and so on. He has composed music for over twenty musical dramas and has worked closely with musicians such as Kalinga Rao, H K Narayana, and others. Winner of several prestigious awards including the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, he has recorded 1200 Rangasangeetes (theatre songs), which have been released in 12 CDs by the Department of Kannada and Culture.
