Join us for a screening of Casting Music, a film by Ashok Maridas.
Casting Music explores the musical tradition of the Savita Samaj, a community in Karnataka whose contributions to the musical legacy of the Nadaswaram instrument has remained untold. The film deftly combines stories of the instrument along with those of its performers, their negotiations and struggles as a community of musicians and barbers, and their intertwined lives beyond the musical world. The film uses the instrument as a visual metaphor to examine the impact of socio-economic issues on the lives of the community.
Ashok Maridas is a documentary filmmaker with over two decades of experience and 150 films to his credit. He has made numerous short films and long documentaries and has also worked with national and international developmental organisations on issues such as child rights, gender, environment, LGBTQ rights, energy and poverty.
The filmmaker will be present at the venue for a post-screening discussion.
