presents
Grant Showcase with Prakash Garud and Sharanya Ramprakash

Join us for presentations by IFA grantees, and theatre practitioners Prakash and Rajani Garud, and Sharanya Ramprakash.

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION
Prakash
and Rajani, and Sharanya will talk about their journeys exploring the traditional forms – Doddataand Yakshagana, respectively.

Prakash and his collaborator Rajani, were supported with a grant under our Arts Research and Documentation Programme, to study the history and development of the 200-year old tradition of Doddata, by tracing the changes in its practice in response to the Parsi theatre and subsequently, the Company theatre. The research also investigated into the politics of Kannada language and patronage by religious institutions, which have informed the practice and performance of Doddata in recent times.
Prakash's project was made possible by a grant from India Foundation for the Arts, with support from Sir Ratan Tata Trust.

Sharanya received a grant under the Arts Practice Programme to create a theatrical production that explores the position of women, role of women characters and streevesha (female impersonation) within the male-dominated practice of Yakshagana. Drawing from research and personal experience, the performance imagines a reversal of roles in the popular Yakshagana plot of Draupadi Vastrapaharana.
Sharanya's project was made possible by a grant from India Foundation for the Arts, with part support from Voltas Limited.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCES
Two theatrical pieces will also be part of this showcase. A traditional Doddata piece will be performed by Narendra Gorappanavar and troupe; while, Sharanya and the Dramanon team, will present – Akshayambara – a performance piece that explores gender in Yakshagana.
