Join us for an exciting new play by theatre practitioner Abhishek Majumdar, Muktidham, between January 27, 2017 and January 29, 2017, at Ranga Shankara, Bangalore!

The play is based on the history of conflict between Buddhism and Hinduism in the 8th century, when the Buddhist Pala kings were ruling the East and large parts of northern India, and Buddhism was at its peak. Set in a Matha in the fictional town of Beerpur, the story revolves around this Hindu temple town which is surrounded by Buddhists. With the head of the Matha, 'Nath Nand' set to retire soon to the Muktidham to die and achieve salvation, the stage is set for an exploration of the complex relationships between religion, power, politics, caste and patriarchy.

Abhishek Majumdar is a playwright, teacher, actor and the Artistic Director of the theatre group Indian Ensemble in Bangalore. He is a graduate from LISPA (London International School of Performing Arts) and has trained at Yatrik, Mahesh Dattani’s Studio and the Adishakti Theatre Lab. He is a member of the Young Vic Director’s Network, London and the Lincoln Center Director’s Lab 2011, New York. He received the first Shankar Nag Rangakarmi Award given by Ranga Shankara, Bangalore for his contribution to theatre. His notable plays include An arrangement of shoes, The Djinns of Idgah, Afterlife of Birds, Rizwan, Kaumudi and Dweepa to name a few.

This production received support from India Foundation for the Arts, under its Arts Practice programme.

This performance is suitable for ages 14 and above.
