Join us for a screening of Gali, a documentary exploring the subculture of B-boying and Breaking in Delhi, by Samreen Farooqui and Shabani Hassanwalia at Studio Tamaasha, Mumbai on Saturday, July 22, 2017. The filmmakers will be present for a discussion post the screening!

"Gali delves into a world that grew under the shadow of globalisation, of a youth that role-plays participation, as well as, dissent, against a mainstream that continues to exclude them."

The film captures snippets from the everyday lives of the dancers who populate the streets of Delhi. It allows glimpses into a culture at the margins, as resistance is written through the dancers’ bodies and the music provided by their contemporaries in beatboxing and rapping.

Samreen Farooqui and Shabani Hassanwalia founded Hit and Run Films, an independent video production unit, in 2005, which produces documentaries, video art and intervention films. Their first documentary, Out of Thin Air, on the local cinema industry of Ladakh was supported by IFA. It was selected to be screened at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam and was the opening film at Film South Asia, 2009, besides playing at numerous other festivals. They’ve worked with and been supported by various organisations including The Films Division, Channel 4, PSBT, UNESCO and the Ford Foundation.

Searching Cultures is a year-long collaboration between IFA and Tamaasha Theatre, presenting a selection of IFA grantee projects in Mumbai through 2017!
