Satyanarayana

Satyanarayana is one of our most promising resource people for the Kali Kalisu workshops for training teachers and is the Headmaster of the Government Higher Primary School at Maravanthe, Kundapura Taluk, Udupi District. It took IFA nearly two terms of grantmaking to help him get over his anxiety of being a grantee and actually apply for a grant. Being the most popular teacher in Udupi district, he has initiated various activities to connect the school with the local community over time. His former students have also donated a bus to the school.

Satyanarayana’s project is an attempt to bridge the gap that exists in arts based learning through the government’s Nali Kali programme for students between the third and fifth standards. Thus he wishes to work with the fourth standard children of his school. Aided by a series of workshops run by educationists, artists and designers for teachers, block resource persons, and students the project will establish a dialogic relationship between the school experience and the life of the community by connecting the syllabus to the local context. In the process they will be guided to create a self learning kit that maps local cultural practices, natural habitats, a range of domestic songs, and other forms of community expressions. He also hopes to solicit continuing support from the local administration to sustain this work in the school post the grant period.

The outcomes of the grant will be a learning kit and a performance. The deliverables of the grant would include photographs from the workshops and performance, the learning kit and a ten to twelve minute video documentation.
