pixel:dust: A Presentation by Sonam Chaturvedi and Priyesh Gothwal | Project Showcase@IFA | June 27, 2024

In the times of screen-driven life, has night been deferred? Have our habits of scrolling through phones and working through the night transformed the sense of time at night? Is there a direct interplay between the society, technology, and time of a pixelated night?

Join us to explore how Sonam Chaturvedi, Priyesh Gothwal, and several artists from across the world created an artistic response to this in pixel:dust, a project under the Explorations category of our Arts Practice programme.

pixel:dust is a multiform lexicon with its first edition - Siu:Yeh (宵) by Sonam Chaturvedi. It consists of responses and contributions by art practitioners—Priyesh Gothwal (India), Merve Ertufan (Turkey), Oisin Moran (Ireland), Merv Espina (Philippines), Suvani Suri (India) and first draft (India). It is an assemblage as an Artist-box of artist books, DIY origami, snacks, smell, seeds, playlists, recipes and other objects that make the night and its flickering vocabulary palpable.

The lexicon examines the dilation of time across a deferred night lit by digital technologies/ pixels. It looks at the endurance and exposure of the contemplative nighttime within a techno-capitalist landscape, and how its textures and frictions can be understood through the multiple tangible forms. In this showcase, the presenters will talk about how the project explored the way time spent awake at night stimulates a spectrum of habits, social behaviours, cultural milieus and associations that are too obscure and fragile for our existing vocabulary to grasp.
